WALTER PALMER AND DESCENDANTS

OHIO EARLY SETTLERS | First Settlers in Palmer Township

Walter was listed on the Four Sisters passenger list, a ship from London to Salem, Massachusetts on 5 April, 1629. This ship was part of the Endicott Fleet: Talbot, Lyon, Lyons Whelp, George Bonaventure, and Mayflower.

William was listed as coming on the ship Fortune in 1621, while his wife, Frances, Came in 1623 on the ship Ann. Abraham was a passenger on the Winthrop Fleet with his wife, Grace of Canterbury, Kent. So all three brothers cast their lots with the new world.

Walter had five children too old to be born in America:

Grace, born about 1612-1614 in England

John born 1617 in England

William born about 1619-1622 in England

Jonah born about 1620-1622 in England

Elizabeth born about 1620-1625 in England

Walter married 1 June 1633 In Roxbury Church to Rebecca Short.

Their children:

Hannah born May or June 1634

Elihu born Jan 1636

Nehemiah born October on November, 1637

Moses born March 1640

Benjamin born 30th day of 3rd month, 1642

Gershom born about 1644

Rebecca born 1647

Walter established a large family from which many descended. All of his children born in America were born in Charlestown with the exception of Gershom and Rebecca, who were born in Rehoboth.

Various plans for a new town to be called Seacuncke, also known as Rehoboth, were made and among those who met to arrange the settlement were Walter, William Chesebrough and others. William immediately settled there. The value of Walter’s estate at this point was 419 pounds. He was propounded a freeman in Plymouth Colony 4 June 1645 and admitted a freeman 28 October 1645. He was deputy from Rehoboth to the general Court of the Plymouth Colony for the years 1646 and 1647, a surveyor in 1650, and on the grand jury 7 October 1651, Constable in 1652, a resident of Rehoboth until 28 June 1653.

William Chesebrough went from Rehoboth previous to 1653 and examined the land known as Wequetequoc, pronounced Wickety-Squack, and supposing it to be a part of Massachusetts territory, applied for a grant of 300 acres, soon increasing it to 2300. He then induced Walter Palmer and Thomas Minor to settle there. This explains how Walter came to what later became Stonington..

Walter at once bought land on the east bank of Wequetequoc Cove, in which he made an agreement with Gov. John Haines of Hartford for purchase thereof. There was a discrepancy and dispute as to the boundaries of the land east between the Mystic and Pawcatuck Rivers and on 23 April 1662, Gov. John Winthrop, Jr. Of Massachusetts, obtained a charter from King Charles II, establishing the boundaries at Pawcatuck River and in 1665 changed the name to Stonington, Connecticut.

Walter and family first attended the church in New London until about 1657 when the first meeting was held at his house in Stonington by Reverend William Thompson. After that it was held in different homes until the church was built at Stonington.

Walter was buried in the Wequetequock Burying Ground and an association was formed to preserve this cemetery. A large monument to William Chesebrough, Thomas Minor, Walter Palmer and Thomas Stanton was erected by the settlers and dedicated 31 August 1899. All of their birth and death dates were on the monument as a memorial to the men who had done so much to establish a community for their progenitors and to the substance of their lives, a pattern of industry, honesty and community service for others to emulate.

Walter’s son, John, was made a freeman 13 March 1638 and died unmarried in Charlestown.

Walter’s son William was made freeman the same day in March. An allotment of land in Killingsworth is dated 1665. He died unmarried approximately 27 May 1697.

Elizabeth married Thomas Slew 2 June 1665. She married, second, Thomas Chapman 26 October 1677 in Stonington.
Hannah married Thomas Hewitt. He established a West Indies trade and in 1662 started out. He was never heard from again.

Hannah partitioned the court for permission to remarry and was granted permission on 27 December 1671.

She then married Roger Sterry who died previous to 1680.

Hannah married, third, John Fish on 25 August 1681 and was his third wife.

Thomas Hewett born 2 May 1660

Benjamin Hewett born 1662

    Children by second marriage:

Hannah Sterry born 18 Aug 1672

Hannah probably lived her entire life in Stonington.

Elihu born early January, 1636, was baptized into first church in Charlestown, eleventh month, twenty fourth day of 1635 and died 19 September 1666, unmarried.

Benjamin , baptized into First Church in Charlestown on the sixth day, fourth month of 1642. Took oath of freeman in October 1669 as listed on the census of Stonington in 1669. On 21 June 1676, Benjamin was sent by Nehemiah Palmer, the constable, to warn the people of Wickford of trouble uprising in the land disputes between Rhode Island and Pettequamscutt. On 11 December, 1683,

Benjamin received an allotment of 100 acres at Shoanoak in Stonington, which he gave to Nehemiah. On 5 June 1684 he divided all his property between his brothers. This is probably when he left Stonington for Northfield, Massachusetts.

Northfield was settled in 1671 and Benjamin Palmer was granted 30 acres in 1683. He was a signed of the petition for the town in 1683 and took possession of his land in 1685. He soon became a leading man of th etown and 16 March 1686 was chosen supervisor and also Measurer of Land. Soon thereafter the people were driven out and the town was destroyed by Indians. He did not return for the subsequent rebuilding. On August 1691, on the 10th day, Thomas Minor’s diary stated that Benjamin and his wife had come home. He remained there until his death dated 8 April 1701.

Rebecca, born 1647 in Rehoboth, died 2 May 1713 at Stonington.

Married Elisha Chesebrough 20 April 1635, son of William Chesebrough and Anna Stevenson of Stonington.

Rebecca married, second, John Baldwin 24 July 1672. He was born 28 October 1635 and died 19 August 1683 in New London, Conneticut, son of Sylvester Baldwin and Sarah Bryant.

(It is noted that there are three Elizabeths listed as family members. This may be due to the fact that the birth rate was so high and also that it was sometimes a custom to give a second child the deceased child’s name. This may also be due to the fact that sometimes people neglected to give a child their name until they were older, calling them Sissy or Baby until they were old enough to give themselves a name of their own choosing. If accurate birth dates were not available, it would be questioned if these were actual births.)
